Then and Now

Comparing things between the past and modern life, I would say that people are more liberated nowadays.Issues, as implied in the stories we read, evolved with time. They became more personal and intimate. Problems in the past were related to oppression and the need for freedom. After becoming an independent country, problems were focused on personal relationships such as love or lack thereof. I guess that is why people now are more liberated. Freedom was taken to heart and maybe sometimes, abused. We do what we want not thinking of how bad things used to be for the generations before us. People became more open to issues that used to be taboo — sex, forbidden love, and such. Issues that were once taboo became more acceptable in society. It could be openly talked about and people just understood.

The advantage of modern life over the past is that now that we know our strengths, we know that we can fight back. We know that we do not just have to sit down and watch things fall around us because we can do something to stop and maybe prevent it. We are more aware of what we can do; and then there’s the thin line between this being an advantage and a disadvantage. We are so sure of things that we try to control everything. We have a tendency to play god in our lives, and sometimes others’ too.

What does technology have to do with this? It’s made it so easy to express ourselves and consequently, influence others with our way of thinking. For me, this is something positive. It helps to see things in another’s perspective. As long as we keep an open mind about things, this is a good thing.

However, it has also made everything so easy for us that we sometimes lose sight of what is really important.
Technology could turn us into lazy, selfish people who have forgotten the essence of being human. We are always rushing that we forget to stop and appreciate the beauty of life. We have forgotten how to work for things. We end up always taking the easy way out because that is what we are used to. We only look ahead forgetting how our history has made us what we are today. A lot of us have become slaves of technology that we think we cannot live with some of these things. The essentials have evolved as problems have with time. Technology has somewhat made us petty.
